Well just like that the Padres get swept. After winning 5 straight they have now lost 3 in a row. Not many highlights last night except for a Orlando Hudson solo shot in the top of the 2nd. In the bottom half of the 2nd Collin Cowgill comes back with his 1st carrer home run. The very next inning Aaron Hill hit a 2 run shot to give the Diamondbacks a 3-1 lead. Get Those Brooms Out

That's right!!! Last night, the Padres completed their 4 game sweep of the Marlins. Of course it ended in dramatic fasion. On Trevor Hoffman Day the Pads offense got going early with 3 in the 1st. The inning started with Will Venable lauching a ball 374 feet over the right field wall. Five batters later Kyle Banks stepped up and plated Cameron Maybin and Orlando Hudson with his double to left center making it 3-0. The Marlins offense got a little spark when Mike Stanton homered to left field (393 feet) in the top of the 4th. That was the last offense till John Buck hit a sac fly to Will Venable making it 3-2. Then Bell came in to try and get a 4 out save. He got the first 3 out and the only thing keeping the bells from ringing on Trevor Hoffman Day was Mike Cameron who go a 2-0 pitch middle in and blasted it 400 feet into the Well Fargo Building tieing it up at 3. In the bottom of the 9th former Padre Edward Mujica came in and the first batter he faced was Nick Hundley. Then the unexpected happened when Hundley drove a ball to deep center over the centerfielders head and he chugged all the way around to third for a triple. After two intentional wall the bases were loaded for who else, Will Venable. The Marlins then brought in lefty Mike Dunn. Will Venable then proceeded to single over the rightfielders head. PADRES WIN!!! PADRES WIN!!! PADRES WIN!!!
The winning pitcher was Heath Bell who improved to 3-4 and Edward Mujica is now 8-5.

Its Trevor Time!!!

Today before the Padres-Marlins game the Padres and there fans celebrated Trevor Hoffman as they retired his number. The number 51 will never be worn by a Padre ever again and the number was placed on the batters eye in center field with the 6 of Steve Garvey, the 19 of Tony Gwynn, the 31 of Dave Winfield, the 34 of Randy Jones, and the 42 of Jackie Robinson which is retired from baseball. It was a very nice and emotional ceremony which included Garvey, Gwynn, Jones, Winfield, the Padres staff, and the Hoffman family. Hoffman also recieved a golden rubber which was given to him when he got his 500th save but this time it was ingraved with the number 601 which is how many career saves he had. That wasn't all, he also recieved a mint condition 1958 Cadillac Convertible. The ceremony ended with a tribute to his dad with a video of him singing the national anthem at Fenway Park on opening day of 1981. It was a great ceremony that I really enjoyed. After the ceremony the game started and we will find out if the Padres can bring the brooms out and sweep the Marlins.

Drew Cumberland and the Padres vs. Mets 8/17

This morning we found out that former Padre prospect Drew Cumberland became a coach for the Padres Single A team the Fort Wayne Tincaps. Drew Cumberland is a 22 year old SS who because of a rare medical condition he was forced to retire. The rare condition is called bilateral vestibulopathy which causes the portions of both inner ears that control balance to be damaged.

Now on to the Padre game. Today's pitching mathup had Mat Latos face off against Dillion Gee. The game was scoreless through the first 2 innings and it wasn't until David Wright stepped to the plate in the top of the 3rd with 2 on and 1 out and blasted a ball 388 feet over the left field wall. After that Mat Latos was lights out and it was 3-0 until Angel Pagan's RBI groundout against Pat Neshek in the 7th. The Padres come back in the bottom of the 7th with a RBI double from Aaron Cunningham to make it 4-1. The Mets started to pull away with a 3 run top of the 8th which made it 7-1. The Padres where able to come back and score 2 in the bottom of the 9th but it was not enough and the Mets won 7-3. The Mets improve to 60-63 and the Padres continue to struggle and are now 55-70. The winning pitcher was Dillion Gee who improved to 11-4 and Mat Latos is now 6-12.

The Padres will now have the 57-65 Marlins come to town for a 3 game series starting tomorrow at Petco. The pitching matchup for game one of the series has Tim Stauffer, who is 7-9 with a 3.53 ERA, against Javier Vasquez who is 7-10 with a 4.68 ERA.
